We have had a quiet but growing presence in Vergennes for some time now: The Boys and Girls Club. Did you know that there are 10,000 Vermont kids, and by kids I mean grade schoolers right up through teenagers, who are B&GC members? This year I have had the priviledge of being asked to serve on a B&GC committee and just have got to say: what a motivational outfit! Our kids get tons of personal development and opportunities that accelerate their ability to discover and work with their own natural potential.
Congratulations to MONIQUE SIMPSON of Vergennes, who was just selected as the 2008 Vermont State Youth of the Year after a full day at the state capital, culminating with a dinner attended by many of our legislators. The 2007 Youth of the Year Belinda Hall is also from Vergennes. Hi everyone,
i know that it's April 16, but before leaving the tax season entirely, take a tip or two from me to put in your housing file!
Have you refinanced your loan? If you did so, and paid points, you have been amortizing the cost of the points over the life of the loan. If you sold last year, you can deduct the unamortized balance in the year of sale. Not a well known deduction, but could come in handy. How about this next one...
If you bought an existing home last year, you the buyer can deduct any mortgage points that were paid by the Seller. You must of course then reduct the basis of the home by that amount, meaning a bigger profit on resale, but it won't be much, and the federal tax exclusion for a primary residence on gains of up to $250,000 for a single person, and $500,000 for a married couple will probably offset any issue there!
